Problem when publish

Hello, I am trying to write about a company in Egypt and when I check "show preview" I see this "This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments, a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. @Emadody: If you're referring to the only draft in your edit history, Draft:Ahmed Helmy, it is three sentences with grammar problems and no cites to demonstrate the required notability or for verification of stated facts. This is not even close to what is an acceptable article on Wikipedia, which summarizes what reliable, independent, secondary sources have written about a notable (per Wikipedia's standards) encyclopedic subject. It should be written in a formal, even scholarly, WP:TONE with proper formatting, spelling, and grammar, and contain suitable citations to those reliable sources for any non-trivial statements. This is in stark contrast to what many people believe, which is that they can just "open a page" or profile for someone and write whatever they want to tell the world. Fixed; FWIW the date parammeter should only contain the date not anything else like (as in this case) 'volume' or 'number'. THere were also ref tags which are not required and caused the the link to render incorrectly. Eagleash (talk) 02:35, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Use of sort keys for list articles

How should sort keys be implemented for list articles? For example, should List of Banana Fish episodes include:

• {{DEFAULTSORT:Banana Fish episodes, List of}}?
• {{DEFAULTSORT:List of Banana Fish episodes}}?
• no {{DEFAULTSORT}} template at all? something else entirely?

I read WP:DEFAULTSORT, WP:NAMESORT and WP:SORTKEY, but I can't fully make sense of them. I noticed this issue when looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Quality articles § Featured lists, where you can see that inconsistent application has jumbled the listing. @Goszei: {{DEFAULTSORT:}} only affects the listing on category pages. Pages at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Quality articles#Featured lists are displayed in the order they are written in the wikitext. I don't know whether JL-Bot uses the DEFAULTSORT value to decide where to write them if they are added by the bot. List articles are usually sorted without "List of" in categories for lists. In other categories it varies so list articles often add sort keys to individual categories like [[Category:Lists of anime episodes|Banana Fish]] instead of using DEFAULTSORT. Death of Elijah McClain

The Aurora Police department has blocked edits of this page under claims to protect from vandalism.

Elijah Jovan McClain, a 23-year-old African-American massage therapist in Aurora, Colorado, was murdered after police put him in a chokehold and he was injected with ketamine as a sedative by paramedics on the evening of August 24, 2019. An Aurora citizen reported to police that McClain was acting suspiciously wearing a ski mask, although the caller also indicated that he did not believe anyone was in danger, and that he believed McClain was unarmed.

This is unacceptable. Remove this restriction immediately. Bullshit. The article was protected from editing by anonymous editors like yourself by one of our own experienced editors and trusted administrators, User:Wugapodes, because the article had been disruptively edited by a number of anonymous editors, including you, to turn it into an attack article, instead of maintaining a factual tone and stating the facts (sufficiently damning in and of themselves, in my opinion) about the case. The reason I gave in the protection summary is persistent disruptive editing, which is different from vandalism; I think that padlock might be misleading but those give pretty broad rationales. Looking through the history, the main issues were neutral point of view and our policy on material relating to living persons. I don't think the issues were bad faith editing, and I actually think many people wanted to help so I understand the OP's frustration. I've created an edit notice for the page which hopefully does a better job of explaining why the page was protected and by whom. Hello, Rrathod775. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand what Wikipedia is. Wikipedia does not contain any profiles - not a single one. it contains articles about notable subjects, including companies; but an article about a company is not a profile because it does not belong to the company, is generally not written by the company, is not controlled by the company, and in some cases may contain material which the company very much does not want to appear. This is because Wikipedia articles are not based on what the subject says or wants to say, but almost entirely on what independent commentators, published in places with a reputation for editorial control and fact checking, have chosen to say about the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 10:57, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

@Mojiayan, If you use mobile phone to edit wikipedia, then, you would not be able to move or rename a page. There is a way that you can turn on the "Desktop Site" and then move a page. Changing password & Visual editor

Hi, I'm here for discussing two problems. First is, I'm not able to change my password. I've tried twice or thrice, but it doesn't change and remains the old one. Is it due to that I don't use email address? Second is, I uses visual editor to edit Wikipedia, but it loads very slow. Nearly a month ago, it was finely working. You should be able to change font sizes on your browser. Thanks for donating, but you don't need to tell us that you donate, as donations are collected by the Foundation that operates the computers Wikipedia is on, and they don't typically handle day to day operations. 331dot (talk) 10:54, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

In many browsers you can zoom in with Ctrl++, zoom out with Ctrl+-, and go to default size with Ctrl+0. Holding Ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel may also zoom. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:56, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

What if I have an alternative (and trademarked) definition of a term, but a page already exists for that term?

I'm new to Wikipedia, but our company has a term that we are trademarking and we would like to create a page about it, but there is already a page offering a definition of that term. If you are editing about your company or its products, you must review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies and make the appropriate declarations(compliance with the latter policy is a Terms of Use requirement). In essence, you would do both- create a separate article(not just a "page") with a disambiguation in the title(such as "ProductA (TypeA)") and provide a disambiguation link at the top of the existing article, see Bill Clinton for an example of this.

However, merely trademarking something does not merit it an article. A topic merits an article if it receives significant coverage in independent reliable sources showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of notability. In addition, neologisms do not typically merit articles once created; they must be shown to be in widespread use. 331dot (talk) 16:02, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

I doubt very much that such a claim should be in a Wikipedia article. Even if you find a source that is otherwise reliable, I'll bet that there is at least one other reliable source claiming another mall is "largest". It's too subjective (and promotional, for that matter). Hello, An Aggregator. Your language "get an artist biography published" sounds as if you believe this is something done for the benefit of the artist. It is not. Wikipedia is not here to advance anybody's career, web presence, or trendingness. It is an encyclopaedia which aggregates already published information about notable subjects. If your artist meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then there could be an article about them. It will not belong to them, they will have no control over its contents, and it should be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with the artist have chosen to publish about them, not on what the artist themselves have said, published or done. --ColinFine (talk) 22:25, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Definition of African-American and Black American

African American should be defined and regarded as

      Enslaved people brought from the Continent of Africa entered the Americas without a paper trail documenting their country of origin. People without knowledge or documentation of their country of origin but known to arrived from the Continent Africa causes labeling as African-American more than appropriate. 
     Immigrants arriving from the various Countries within the Continent of Africa should be identified as Nigerian-American, Cameroon-American, Senegal-American etc, the same as those from immigrating from Europe, India, Australia, etc., are identified as Italian-American,Irish American, German-American, etc. Black or White labelling identifies only (so called) skin color not country of origin.  
      Finally, there is only one race, the human race. They are both on 2020 United States presidential election which is the only meaningful interpretation of "the main page" in this context. They are not in the infobox but they are both in the lead and later sections. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:32, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

There are certain criteria to be listed in the infobox, this is described on the article talk page. Off the top of my head I believe a candidate must be polling with at least 5% of the vote to be in the infobox before the election, or have gotten 5% of the vote or at least one electoral vote afterwards. 331dot (talk) 08:35, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Wish to remove links to a page that I hope to delete

There's a category page that I hope to delete. I've already posted the deletion template on the page and brought it up on the most recent "Categories for discussion" page, but could anyone please tell me if, in the meantime, it's okay for me to remove the category links on that page? I've already removed the pages that were grouped in it, so I'd hate for someone to just find an empty category page. (Edit: The title of this section should have been "links on a page that I hope to delete", but since they're category links, they manifest elsewhere.) (Edit: Also sorry if the wording of this made it difficult to understand; I'm not sure if I should clarify further, for fear of insulting those who did understand it.) @Thylacine24: You are not allowed to remove parent categories from the category, and you are not allowed to remove member pages from the category either. The lead of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion says: "Except in uncontroversial cases such as reverting vandalism, do not amend or depopulate a category once it has been nominated at CfD as this hampers other editors' efforts to evaluate a category and participate in the discussion." Also, the decision may be to keep or rename the category and then removed pages would have to be found again and readded. Even if the category is deleted, we may want to find an alternative category for the pages. Please restore them. PrimeHunter (talk) 07:59, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Etvte It would help to know which article you are talking about, but changing the title first requires a page move. You can request a page move at Requested Moves or you can discuss it on the article talk page. Be advised that Wikipedia does not necessarily use official or legal names for article titles, it uses whatever independent reliable sources generally use. Before you submit it for review you need to place each reference immediately after the text which it supports, see Help:Referencing for beginners. You also need to remove the misplaced external links from within the draft article text. Dealing with censorship of sexually explicit content

Dear all, recently I came across an instance of censorship in the article Lao Ai, specifically with reference to Lao's alleged sexual ability that led to his involvement in Qin imperial politics and his downfall. This material is recorded in canonical Chinese history, in the Records of the Grand Historian, and is integral to the character's biography (I have since edited the article to clarify); unfortunately, since the specific passage appears sexual in nature, and since it appears that the page had been subject to vandalism in the past, it is easy for users patrolling new changes by unregistered/new users to assume vandalism, especially if they are unfamiliar with the subject matter.

Since Wikipedia is not censored, I believe that the passage should not be removed. Although there has only been one attempt so far (and I'm hoping it'll stay this way), I'm concerned that any future attempt would not be fixed for a long time until editors with experience in the relevant field show up. Is there any way we can signal to new change patrols that the page really ought to contain sexually explicit content, and thus to be a bit more cautious before reverting changes and/or to read the talk page before doing so? @AristippusSer: The best solution is to cite the sources. It'd be hard for someone to justify removal then. The best place to raise the issue, which will also then be preserved for future activity, is the article's talk page at Talk:Lao Ai. I suspect the concern could be more about WP:DUE weight (so to speak ) than just censorship. I imagine there's lots of legendary material about historic figures, which may have only one source (that may have been repeated by others, ala WP:CIRCULAR), that we eliminate if it's not central to an understanding of the subject. It's not ideal, but there are times when, if I want other editors to see something about a specific piece of content before they edit it, I add an HTML comment near it. Hi AlanM1, I have already left a note on the talk page there. In this particular case, the content in question is in fact the primary historical significance of the personage — some historians have even thought that the record we have of him is meant to be allegorical rather than historical, given that the name he is known under is literally a sexual innuendo in Old Chinese. I have added this and other information to the article, citing relevant works of course; hopefully with the expanded explanation people will be less inclined to judge the material as irrelevant, and the issue won't come up again. Palash Chandra Banik Wikipedia is not a place for people to write about themselves. Please read the autobiography policy; autobiographical articles, while not forbidden, are strongly discouraged. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage say about article subjects that are shown to meet the special Wikipedia definition of notability; in this case, the definition of a notable person. In order for you to succeed in writing about yourself, you would have to forget everything you know about yourself and what you do, and only write based on the content of independent sources that have chosen on their own to give you significant coverage. Most people cannot do this about themselves, though it is technically possible. If you think that you can do that, and have the sources to support an article about you, you should use Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft.

A Wikipedia article about you is not necessarily a good thing. You cannot lock it to the text that you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Once created, you could not directly edit it(though you could make edit requests). Any information about you, good or bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. Please keep this in mind.

How to sort by last name on a category article?

Hello, here's my issue: I added various categories at the end of the Hilda Tenorio article and as you know, category articles of people are ordered alphabetically by last name, but the problem is that in the case of Hilda Tenorio, the system thinks or supposes that "Hilda" is her last name (rather than Tenorio) when in reality it's her first name and because of that it adds her article to the "H" section rather than the "T" section. I was wondering if you could help me to solve this problem. Any ideas how to solve this?

Category:American curators vs. Category:American art curators

What is the criteria for whether I should assign a United States-based art curator to Category:American curators or to Category:American art curators? I'm not understanding the rationale for these two separate categories.

(It does not appear that "Category:American art curators" is meant to be for curators of "American art".)

In general, an article should be placed in the more specific category (unless the more general category is tagged as non-diffusing, in which case it should go into both). Yes, it seems that Category:American curators is for non-art curators, e.g. John D. Anderson, Curator of Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum. I understand the principle that articles should be placed in the more specific category. In this case, though, I'm having some doubts/reservations about putting the art curators in a separate category, especially since so many art curators are already in the broader Curators category.
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to have a discussion among editors who might be categorizing curators. Where would be the best place for me to start a discussion about how to assign pages in these two categories? Should I use Category talk:American curators?
Similarly, are there any other analogous Category scenarios that have been discussed already that you could point me to, so that I could learn more about how this has worked for other fields? I see no problem with the separation; art and non-art curators are probably entirely separate groups (though even an overachieving renegade or two wouldn't change that). You may be misunderstanding the purpose of Wikipedia. It is not an indiscriminate collection of biographies; rather, subjects are included if they satisfy the notability criteria, which require high-quality independent coverage. Further, there is a huge backlog of such requests at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Film, radio and television#People. We're all volunteers here, and everyone works on what satisfies them. Writing an article from scratch entails a significant amount of work (hours), unlike a social media profile or database site entry. If you are notable, it's probably more likely that an article for you will be created when an editor sees one of your films, writes about it, notices there is no article for you, and decides to write one. Help to resolve the problem.

The company is one of the pioneers on Robotics in India and has been in the forefront of fighting Covid-19 in India by introducing UVC disinfectant robots and other Thermal scanning robots. I have cited plenty of references in the page for verification. Please let me know what is the problem so that I can try and fix it as I honestly believe the page merits a mention on wikipedia

Anuj 0601, please be aware that when the notability of a topic is judged, the references are assessed on quality, not quantity. The references that I have checked are not independent, being based on statements by the company's founder, and so do very little to help establish notability. There are additional benefits to having an account, see Wikipedia:Why create an account?, but your username cannot be a brand name or company name, that would violate the username policy. Your username must indicate that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account and gives no one else access to it. If you do not remember your password and did not add an email address to your account, there is no way to regain access to your account. What is this translation of? How and where did you try to submit it? Who told you you are not an official contributor? Hi Romaingct, the rules on English Wikipedia might be different to French Wikipedia. On English Wikipedia, only accounts that are auto-confirmed can create new articles- this means your account must be at least 4 days old, and you have at least 10 edits anywhere on English Wikipedia. If you are editing on behalf of a company, then in English Wikipedia you must declare your status as a Paid editor, and you must also submit your draft for review to articles for creation. I suggest you create it as a draft, Draft:name of company, which you can do right away. Drag implies costume for performance purposes! I am unaware whether she actually participated in any Drag shows, but I do know that she dressed in feminine clothing, wore flower crowns, and identified herself as a woman! If you must include the descriptor, Transgender, then fine, but She MUST be recognized first and foremost as an LGBTQ+ Activist! You do not generally include a person's identified gender or sex on any cis person's information page!

Wikipedia search results in Spanish (I prefer English)

For the past few months, whenever I perform a google search for something and Wikipedia comes up as the first search result, for some reason the page is always in Spanish. I DO NOT want this as my preferred language. But all my attempts to change the language that automatically comes up back to English have failed. If it is Google returning results in Spanish, then it is probably not a Wikipedia setting. Might be trying to Geolocate you based on internet address or perhaps there is some Google preference you can set. RudolfRed (talk) 23:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Archiving error

Something strange seems to have happened with the archiving on Talk:Aberfan disaster; there's no Archive 2, 3 or 4, and the archive skips straight to Archive 5, which was created by User:Lowercase sigmabot III in 2017 by archiving lots of threads en masse. (Archive 1 was manually archived in 2010, and contains a single thread started by Jimbo.) The effect of this is that Template:Talk header is only displaying Archive 1 because it assumes the others don't exist, and so archived threads appear to be disappearing into the ether.

What's the right way to fix this? Is it to move the archives to the sequential numbers? Or to modify the header template somehow? (I should say, I've never edited the article or talk page, to my knowledge; I just stumbled upon the issue while clicking aimlessly.) YorkshireLad  ✿  ^(talk) 00:01, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

SchroCat originally set up archiving with a wrong value |counter = 5.[2] This tells the bot to start with archive 5. I have moved Talk:Aberfan disaster/Archive 5 to Talk:Aberfan disaster/Archive 1, added the single thread from the original archive 1 [3], moved Talk:Aberfan disaster/Archive 6 to Talk:Aberfan disaster/Archive 2, and set |counter = 2 [4] so the bot will continue archive 2 next time. That didn't answer my question. it says:

I hadn't realized that there was any "spellcheck dictionary that Wikipedia uses". When editing Wikipedia, I (for example) use Firefox, which uses its own "dictionary" (to whose wiggly red lines I normally pay no attention). What is this Wikipedia dictionary -- other, of course, than the list Quisqualis pointed to of words that you're welcome to copy to your hard drive, edit to your taste, and add to the "dictionary" (list of acceptable strings) of whatever software you're using? -- Hoary (talk) 07:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
