Moby v2025.07.25

By Tracy Poff (2216) on July 25, 2025 · 2 comments

This week had a number of small bug fixes and behind-the-scenes updates, but there's one very visible one: now, we'll initially blur images and videos on mature games. You can click to display them, and (if you are logged in) save that preference permanently. This is necessary to comply with EU regulations, and happily will also help prevent any surprising images from appearing on your screen if you click a link to an unknown game.

Other updates:

  • If a transparent company logo is too close to the page background color, we'll add a background to make it more visible.
  • Game groups will now show or hide NSFW games according to your chosen filtering option.
  • Approvers: Soundtracks will now show up in the list of pending items at the top of game pages.

This week, we've expanded our soundtrack feature to support Bandcamp embeds. These require a little manual effort to get the right ID to put in the box, so check the Standards for instructions. Indie game soundtracks are often on Bandcamp only, so check if your favorite indie game has one available!

API:

  • Now Bronze subscribers can retrieve Ad Blurbs. Use include=adblurbs to request this data. Ad Blurbs refer to official promotional text, such as Steam store descriptions, catalogue descriptions, or the descriptions on the backs of boxes.

Others:

  • Bandcamp embeds are now supported for soundtracks.
  • Soundtracks will now show up on the homepage updates feed.
  • Soundtracks can no longer be submitted without streaming links.
  • Approvers: Added 'change status' links to game, company, and person edit overview pages.
  • Fix: Soundtracks will now correctly notify you when their approval status changes.
  • Fix: Soundtracks will now display properly in their contribution list page.
  • Fix: Resetting your password will now work correctly in certain exceptional cases.
  • Fix: Approvers can now remove the Last Year from a critic source.
  • Fix: Approval previews for release info will now show end dates, if set.
  • Fix: Approval previews for company logos will now show first and last used dates, if set.

We've got two big updates for you, this week. First: you can now add soundtracks to games! I'm thrilled to be able to show off the work of composers, lyricists, and others just as much as we already do for artists, designers, and others.

If a game's soundtrack is available on a supported streaming platform, you can submit it and we will show it on game pages for everyone to enjoy. Check out Baldur's Gate III, Mass Effect 2, or Half-Life to see how it works. If you're logged in, you can also set your preferred streaming platform by editing your user profile, and we'll show that one for you, if available. The full details on what's allowed are in our Standards, as usual.

Hundreds of soundtracks have been added already, but there are many more to go, so check if your favorite game has one to add!

The second update this week is about MobyPlus. Specifically, some of you woke up today with a surprise complimentary subscription. We've always offered this as a perk to our most dedicated contributors, and we wanted it to be more accessible, so we've made it easier to earn free access: if you have earned 480 points in the past year, you'll automatically unlock a complimentary subscription, no extra action needed, and you'll keep it as long as you continue to meet the requirements. Enjoy it, and thank you to everyone who contributes!
