AFI AWARDS 2019, celebrating the year’s most outstanding achievements in film and television, will take place Friday, January 3, 2020. Each year, the event honors 10 films and 10 TV series for their contributions to the art form. During their recent, ongoing digitization efforts, AFI Archivists uncovered two original pencil sketches, on personal letterhead, by eight-time Oscar®-winning master costumer Edith Head. The sketches were hidden behind a reel containing an oral history of Head, who designed costumes for such true classics as ALL ABOUT EVE, VERTIGO, FUNNY FACE, REAR WINDOW, ROMAN HOLIDAY, SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE STING, SABRINA and so many more. These sketches will be framed and displayed in the AFI Library.

The American Film Institute today received a $350,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to embark upon an unprecedented, landmark study of gender parity in the history of American film. The AFI Conservatory and the Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation (WJSFF) have partnered to launch the second annual Young Women in Film intensive. Beginning March 26, the eight-week filmmaking workshop will be held on the AFI Campus in Los Angeles for 45 promising high school girls from ICEF (Inner City Education Foundation) View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter High School, Immaculate Heart and Synergy Quantum Academy High School. AFI FEST 2019 presented by Audi will take place in Hollywood, CA, from November 14–21, 2019. Entries are now being accepted and filmmakers are invited to submit feature, documentary, experimental, animated and short films at AFI.com/AFIFEST or through FilmFreeway.
