Federal judge may approve Google's FTC Safari deal
18 Nov 2012 | 6:16 pmAt least one of Google's conflicts with the Federal Trade Commission may be close to a finish, as a San Francisco judge has signaled that she may approve a $22.5 million settlement over Google's placement of cookies on Apple's Safari browser. Google agreed to pay the fine in August of this year, and now U.S. District Judge Susan Illston has given a preliminary view that the $22.5 million fine will be adequate. For some reason, Apple decided to not allow this capability directly on the iPad. (It turns out that there was a way to do it, but it required jailbreaking the iPad.) Trying to see if I could connect by supplying my credentials was unsuccessful. I figured it must be showing up because I had signed into the same iCloud account on both machines. I then wondered if using the Back to My Mac URL for iCloud would allow me to connect. To test, in Server.app I selected Manage > Connect to Server... From there chose "Other Mac." Increase volume on Apple Cinema Display
15 Nov 2012 | 7:30 amI have a 27" Thunderbolt Cinema Display, and I use its built-in speakers for the output of alert sounds. (In System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects, you can choose this.) But the volume wasn't very loud, even though I had set the Alert volume slider to its maximum setting. I'd been trying to figure out why, because when I listen to music, the alert volume - and a sound I use to alert me when VIP e-mails arrive - isn't loud enough to be heard. So I remembered that Audio-MIDI Setup has a number of tweaks for system sound settings. This app is found in /Applications/Utilities. -

14 Nov 2012 | 7:30 amHave you ever had trouble finding an application's preference file? It isn't always easy, as the name of the .plist file sometimes isn't even close to the app's name. Here's an easy way to make it show itself. Open the /Library/Preferences folder in your user account. (In Lion or later, from the Desktop, hold down the Option key and select Go > Library to access your user account.) Set the window to list view, then click the Date Modified tab at the top so they are listed by the newest files first. Some apps will update their .plist file every time you use the program. Remove recent e-mail recipients on iOS
13 Nov 2012 | 7:30 amUp until iOS 6, there was no way to remove e-mails from the "recently contacted" list when you start typing new e-mails, even if that person wasn't in your Contacts. Now, you can remove them one at a time, provided they are not in your Contacts. All you do is start typing the e-mail address, and then when the list of addresses starts to populate the screen, scroll down to the address you wish to delete. It will have a blue arrow pointing to the right. When you tap on that arrow, you'll see a Remove From Recents button; tap that to remove that e-mail address from the recent e-mail list. -
Use text substitutions to correct common typing errors

Sometimes words are an actual word, but not something 99% of people would write. It also sometimes doesn't fix short spelling errors. Apple, HTC Swap Licenses to Settle Patent Case
13 Nov 2012 | 5:00 amApple and HTC agreed to a settlement this week, shelving their years-long patent battle and agreeing to a 10-year licensing agreement. The mobile device makers have been engaged in courtroom battles over patents since 2010, when Apple accused HTC of copying certain features of the iPhone. HTC fought back, claiming Apple had infringed on several of its own wireless patents. The lawsuits are part of Apple's larger global fight against Google's Android operating system, which companies such as HTC and Samsung install on many of their mobile devices.

Recently I showed you how to turn off iCloud documents in there entirety. This post is an extension of this. I am going to show you how to turn off the default save location from iCloud to your normal hard drive. I am using this tip regularly because, although I use iCloud, I use my hard drive far more often as a save location. Changing The Save Location This tip involves using Terminal. I just purchased an inexpensive 17" flat panel LCD today, to replace the 17" CRT display with a broken stand (looks translucent like an iMac). I'm hoping to sell the CRT soon, because it still works well, besides the broken stand. It is just collecting dust in my garage at this point. I want to resurrect my G4 Cube. Slowly getting my Mac stuff together
5 Nov 2012 | 3:18 pmBeen awhile so I thought I would give ya'll an update. PowerMac G5 DP 1.8 with 10.5.8 - upgraded from 3G of 2700u to 4G of HyperX 3200u memory. All setup for email and such. Still gettin comfortable with the Mac software. eMac will be next. I have 10.3 with all the updates headed here this week. Gotta figure out how to get past it on the old owners password protection, an elementary school. This I have already upgraded from 512 to 1G memory, PC133 I think. iMac is still my hold out. Gotta find a cd drive for it. Would love to put a Superdrive or something like it in. Still… -

24 Oct 2012 | 4:29 pmWith the unexpected release of the 4th Generation iPad yesterday some people including myself had just purchased a 3rd Generation iPad. Apples official return period is 15 days. I purchased a second 3rd Generation iPad as I did not see any updates in the next 6 months or so, I was wrong. I just came back from an Apple retail Store 26 days from purchase date and I am glad to say they could not have been more helpful and friendly and said it is up to each store to dictate return policy within reason. They refunded my cash and now I am ready for pre order on Friday morning. -

18 Oct 2012 | 6:29 pmSince I got my new iPhone 5 I have 3 iPhones in my hand now. I have a 4, 4S and a new 5. I am amazed at the difference in speed with each upgrade. The 4 is real slow and the 4S has a huge speed upgrade which I loved over the 4 but the 5 is real fast.It is nice to see the difference at the same time while doing my Apple product trickle down theory to the wife and family. -

Been playing with it and trying to learn all the little things that make it different from PCs. Took me a while to figure out how to get the video card to work with my monitor. Ended up hooking up the old monitor from the Cube to check it out. I can get both DVI ports to work but haven't figured out how to get my flat screen to work alone. Once I get comfortable with the PowerMac it will become the daily user. Need to see if it will run the remote access program my wife uses to access her office from…

It was Apple's 57th store and had 4,600 square foot. The store was closed from July 2011 for renovation to the new standard size which was achieved by taking over the space previously occupied by San Lorenzo's Bikinis. The screen is beautiful, performance is certainly good considering it beats the Mac Pro in some areas. It is even possible to play games on the Retina MacBook Pro if you want.
