Oppose the G8
As the leaders of the G8 countries meet in the secluded mountain setting of Kananaskis, Alberta activists around the world will be in streets actively opposing the destructive agenda perpetuated by the G8.
While representing a small proportion of the world's population the leaders of the G8 nations control the majority of the world's economic resources and impose a neo-liberal form of development on the rest of the world. Through support for
FTAA, IMF / World Bank, and the WTO, and increased privatization and corportatization of Africa through NEPAD, the G8 countries are promoting a world model that benefits the rich and leaves the rest behind.
On June 26th and 27th, in solidarity with protests that will be happening in Alberta and around the world, activists from the Maritimes, Ontario, Quebec and the Northeastern United States are organizing two days of action in Ottawa. The days of action, entitled Take the Capital, involve demonstrations of all kinds, popular education, civil disobedience and direct action, targeting the many manifestations of political and economic power of the national capital.

Protest Against Biotech Convention in Toronto
Over the last two years, thousands of people have gathered to counter the annual
conventions of the biotechnology industry in Boston and San Diego. This year, people will be converging on Toronto to broaden the biojustice movement and challenge the biotechnology industry and their vision for our future. It will be a gathering to learn, strategize and network about genetic engineering in agriculture and pharmaceuticals, biowarfare, genetic and non-genetic discrimination, trade regimes and corporate control, patenting of life and more. This event is timed to challenge the industry's annual convention BIO2002, Toronto, June 9-12.
Meanwhile, Sunday brunch at BIO2002 features Dr. Patrick Moore, who is billed as a founder of Greenpeace who is speaking out against activist scare tactics around biotechnology. Read the press release here.

May Day march organizers protest police violence
On Friday, May 10, organizers of the May Day conference and march held a press conference to explain how the police attacked marchers (see press release)

The Record, K-W's daily newspaper, had disappointing coverage of the march in Tuesday's paper and of the press conference in Saturday's paper

An indymedia activist has filed a formal complaint with police over police actions at the march.
Afterwards, police intimidated participants in the march and conference. In particular, they pulled over, threatened, and gave $300 in fines to Pierre George, who spoke at the conference about the 1995 OPP killing of his brother, Dudley George.

Hundreds Demonstrate Against Tory Convention

Saturday
Hundreds of demonstrators from the Ontario Common Front met at Allan Gardens to participate in a Rally and Snake March against the Tory Convention on Saturday. After listening to several speeches, demonstrators attempted to leave the park, but were blocked from leaving by the throngs of riot cops. Before activists had even left the park, police charged the crowd and brutally arrested several people. Throughout the march police continually harassed demonstrators and at one point violently moved into the crowd with horses. Corralled on the sidewalk, the march was able to make it to the convention centre flanked by hundreds of riot cops on all sides. Arriving at Simcoe Park, the march was met by hundreds of cops behind barricades in front of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre where the Tory Convention was occurring. A festive and vocal rally occurred throughout the afternoon. According to reports 12 arrests were made on Saturday.

After about 1000 anti-poverty activists snake-marched around downtown Toronto in protest of the Tory convention, activists decided to squat in an abandoned building. The squatting action was an act of symbolism to protest the increasing number of homeless and the need for affordable and subsidized housing: problems that the Tories have been ignoring with frigid contempt and advancing with utter cruelty since the Mike Harris government took power in 1995.
After breaking down boards blocking entrance into the Mission Press building (on Victoria and Dundas), about 60 activists went in to spend the night. The 60 or so activists were inside only minutes before riot police began surrounding the building and the protesters outside.
So far, 65 or so activists are reported arrested. There are reports of stunguns and tear gas being used against the squatters, and one activist has been allegedly taken away in an ambulance.

International Women's Day
Throughout the world, events took place on Friday March 8th for International Women's Day. Ontario was no exception.
In Kitchener-Waterloo, a group of women from a local homeless shelter, Mary's Place, planned a demonstration which featured speeches at Kitchener City Hall, and loud chanting for people in the downtown core and guests at the Four Points Sheraton. The main demand of the demonstrators was more support for homeless women.

Black Bloc goes to Oakville
As the Tory leadership hopefuls debated in Oakville, a contingent of anti-capitalist marched through their neighbourhoods. It is thought that this is the largest contingent of anti-capitalist protestors to ever march down the streets of Oakville. Later, inspired by the Olympics, they started playing hockey.
